The idea in March 2005 was clear: no beach, no big city hotel, but a quiet, Nordic place with lots of countryside and a small house that feels more like home than an anonymous hotel. In this search, the Walaker Hotell in Solvorn came up – a traditional family hotel on the Lustrafjord, with a rose garden, wooden houses, and the feeling that time passes differently here. Just from the pictures and descriptions, Sascha immediately felt that this could be the place for his marriage proposal.
16 June 2005, our trip to Nigardsbreen, seemed like a normal day to outsiders: glacier museum, drive into the valley, boat, hike over rocks towards the ice. For us, it was not. One of us had a concrete plan, the other had no idea and was simply impressed by the landscape, the weather, and the rugged rocky world.
The closer we got to the glacier, the more intense the colours and structures of the blue ice became – and at the same time, the inner tension. It was not perfect postcard weather, but it felt right: rough, impressive, unfiltered. Just as life usually is.
At the top, looking down into the valley, the moment finally arrived – just not as smooth as Sascha might have imagined. Grit already wanted to head back down, while Sascha was still looking for the "right" moment. That suited us: one thinks practically, the other tries to make things work out. On the boulder that Sascha had chosen, we finally stood close together, looked down, felt the height, the cold, the soft murmur.
Then came the point when it became clear: if you do not speak now, it will never be perfect enough. So better real than perfect. The prepared sentences disappeared, leaving behind a simple question – and an answer that was clearer than any formulation: first tears, then a nod. A "yes" that was not only spoken but felt. There was no need for an audience, no camera, no big setting. It was enough that the two of us stood there and knew: this was a real step in both of our lives.
